Yakushima

Mention the island Yakushima and you get a japanese gasp of ‘eeeii’, rising to a higher pitch on the last ‘i’. Yakushima is one of the destinations in Japan which nearly every Japanese person has dreams of visiting. Known for being the rainiest place in Japan and for its 3000 year old trees. The island has an inner core of forest covered mountains which are often covered in thick fog, cloud or silver mist.

The Studio Ghibli movie ‘Princess Mononoke’, is said to be based on Yakushima’s forest. Constant sightings of deer and monkeys amongst the moss and ferns easily lead the imagination to believe that tiny tree spirits can still be seen in this magical place.
